Government Refining Engine Technology for Malaysia’s Third National Car

PUTRAJAYA – The Malaysian government is currently refining the engine technology for the third national car project, with the aim of selecting the most advanced and suitable system for future development.

Entrepreneur Development Minister, Datuk Seri Mohd Redzuan Md Yusof, revealed that the project has garnered significant interest from various parties, both locally and internationally.
He emphasized the importance of ensuring the most appropriate technology is selected for the national initiative.

“We are in the process of fine-tuning our collaboration with technology partners, particularly in terms of platform use and engine systems for the national car,” he said during a Bicara Minda session hosted by Sinar Harian.

When asked about the type of engine being considered, Redzuan said it would depend on future developments and technological suitability.

He further disclosed that the third national car is expected to leverage local expertise and will be based on the Extended Range Vehicle (ERV) concept—a type of vehicle that combines electric drive with an internal combustion engine to extend range.

“The government is also evaluating how best to incorporate local engineering talent and industry players in the development of this vehicle,” he added.

The third national car initiative was originally proposed by Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad during a working visit to Japan after he resumed office in 2018. The project is seen as a cornerstone of Malaysia’s push to revive its automotive industry, spur technological innovation, and create a globally competitive local product.

The government envisions the project as a collaborative effort involving the private sector, local entrepreneurs, and international technology partners—positioning Malaysia as a serious player in future automotive trends.
