KUALA LUMPUR – The development of Malaysia’s flying car through the air mobility industry has the potential to create valuable spin-off sectors that will contribute to the national economy, said Entrepreneur Development Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Redzuan Md Yusof.
Speaking in Parliament today, the Alor Gajah MP emphasized that aside from the primary mobility sector, complementary industries could emerge, offering significant added value and helping to increase the country’s pool of technical experts.
“Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad once said to me, ‘Pak Wan can’t get onboard unless there’s insurance,’” Redzuan recalled, illustrating the breadth of industries that could emerge from the project.
“This initiative can lead to the creation of new businesses in fintech, artificial intelligence (AI), and other fields,” he said in response to a question from Rembau MP Khairy Jamaluddin.
Redzuan noted that his ministry had already convened a special coordination meeting with key implementing agencies to discuss the direction and requirements of the air mobility industry. These included the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM), the Department of Survey and Mapping (JUPEM), and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
He also acknowledged that the Ministry of Transport had conducted stakeholder engagement sessions on September 5 to draft policies, licensing frameworks, and guidelines to support the growth of Malaysia’s air mobility ecosystem.
Redzuan added that, barring any unforeseen obstacles, the prototype of Malaysia’s first flying car is expected to be launched by the end of this year.
The flying car initiative has become a symbol of Malaysia’s ambition to be at the forefront of futuristic transportation and a high-tech industrial revolution. Officials believe it could position the country as a leader in Southeast Asia’s emerging mobility sector.
