PUTRAJAYA, Malaysia – The Malaysian government is currently in the process of refining the engine technology for the much-anticipated third national car project, in an effort to ensure it meets modern standards and international competitiveness.
Entrepreneur Development Minister, Datuk Seri Mohd Redzuan Md Yusof, revealed that the initiative has attracted significant interest from various quarters, both locally and abroad.
“We are in the midst of fine-tuning the technological partnership in terms of platform application and engine selection for the third national car,” he said during a Bicara Minda forum organized by Sinar Harian.
Redzuan emphasized that the government is determined to select the most suitable and advanced technology for the project. When asked about the type of engine to be adopted, he noted that it would depend on the evolving needs of the market and technological feasibility.
“The project will be based on the extended range vehicle (ERV) concept, and we aim to harness the expertise available within the country,” he added.
He further noted that the government is exploring the use of local talent and engineering capabilities to reduce dependency on foreign technologies and to encourage the growth of the local automotive ecosystem.
The third national car project was originally proposed by Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad during a working visit to Japan in 2018, shortly after returning to office. The idea is aimed at revitalizing Malaysia’s automotive industry and moving towards cleaner, more sustainable vehicle technologies.
The government believes the initiative can stimulate domestic innovation, create high-skilled jobs, and position Malaysia as a competitive player in the regional automotive sector.
